As the subject suggest, the water pump on my L225DT with just under 1,000 hours is making a growling sound intermittently and when it does, I can feel extra vibrations emanating from the pump. Does this usually mean the pump is on its way to failure?

Change it no while you still have a choice of where to work on it.

Yep good indication of bearing failure. My dad and I worked with an 8N that did that for must have been 50 hours and two years before the pump finally seized. We'd left it idling to warm up and then all the sudden the fan noise stops and we look over to see smoke coming from the fan belt. We just left it over night and then pulled the fan belt and drove it onto a trailer to take it back to our barn for a little TLC.

As it dies the shaft wobbles and it's got a chance of tearing the impeller seal and causing a big leak. In such a case you would not want to drive it for more than a few minutes with no water in the head. As E/S said change it now while you've still got the choice of where to operate on the patient.
