These kinds of builds and conversions have always interested me. I have built a few rock crawlers in my day. My son and I built 3 Jeep Cherokee's and 3 Suzuki Samurai's. We kept the original engines but changed transfer case gearing and final drive gearing in all of them. We had one Suzuki geared so low that my baby girl could crawl faster than that Suzuki could go flat out in 1st gear, low range.

Anyway, I was toying around with an idea several years ago to make a Suzuki Samurai rock crawler swapping in a diesel engine and using an HST transmission. I gave up on that idea when my son joined the Army. I just did not have much interest in doing it alone.

Your post got me to thinking about getting a winter hobby and maybe start a rock crawler project again. I may resurrect my old idea about doing a diesel engine mated to an HST again. I certainly have enough time now that I am retired. If I don't do this, I will have to find something or my wife will continue to find projects for me. Her projects are more like work, not fun and not something that I would consider a hobby.

I read once long ago that AG and construction equipment parts weren't used in off-roading because everyone wanted to compete at some time and level, and only automotive parts were allowed.

I think there are some great combinations available for personal use. I've wanted to build one based on two 4wd tractor front axles, with HST.
