I have had better days! But still like keeping the old ones on the road.

I drive a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee which I purchased used 13 or 14 years ago. Just had the old heap in for a bunch of work, tie rod ends, Pitman arm, cracked intake manifold, oil pressure sending unit etc and etc.

Today drove down to the land , tracked straight as an arrow down the road , all good. Until I got ready to leave, heard a strange "pop" sound and lost power steering. Limped it out to the road, I was a quarter mile in. Pretty sure I did not damage the pump, fingers crossed. At first I thought perhaps the serpentine belt gave way but I had full 14 volts charging and no sign of rising coolant temps. I would guess the high pressure hose blew, which was replaced only last fall. After I got it to the road where the tow truck driver could find me, I got out, opened the hood and serpentine belt is intact. I will find out the cause tomorrow after the shop looks at it.

Glad I have road side assistance on my insurance policy. Tow bill $226. My insurance agent volunteered to drive the 20 miles each way and give me a ride back home due to the height of me climbing in the rollback.

I’ve owned two Jeeps… A 92 Cherokee and (330K miles when it was totaled/rear-ended by a woman driving a Class-A motorhome pulling a car-hauler while texting… I woke up in the back covered in glass)…. and a 2008 Grand Cherokee w/180K miles when it was also wrecked and totalled.
Both great rides. No maintenance problems whatsoever.

But this reminds me of a buddy who had an earlier GC and he called one evening asking me to come help…the water pump had gone out. He told me it was very confusing how to replace the water pump. I told him we’d have it fixed in a couple hours. He said, “I don’t think so… I think this thing is hydraulic.”

“B.S.! “ , I told him. “Water pumps are easy…I’ve done tons of them in my life.”

WRONG.

The water pump in that car….was driven by the POWER STEERING HYDRAULIC PUMP! NO SHEET!

It took us 10 hours…all night…to fix that damn thing. It was one of those vehicles mfr’d right after the Germans bought Chrysler.

Possible that it was the hose that was replaced, there is a lot of junk replacement parts from China being sold today.

I do have the 4.0 straight six and have found it reliable. Over all the cost of ownership has been low for me over the last 13 years. Typical, mostly minor, issues and of course routine maintenance and wear items.
