Looks maybe like a 3rd function valve-I think I see the coil on the left side and maybe the right, but your pic is so close and you can't really see it I can't be sure.

Do the wires go up to the joystick?

A plumbing fitting in the near center is termed an "elbow". Looks like it is male -male. Size usually is set by the inner diameter of the openings.
