Hi all, I need a little help on a topic I know very little about. My shop press has a removable ram with a hand powered pump connected with a hose. the problem is the ram leaks from the seals around the rod. oils will leak past the seal when the ram is anywhere but completely collapsed. the pump doesnt leak anywhere but has to be refilled rapidly.

Questions are how do I determine how to break the ram down to replace the o-rings. a local hyd shop, recently closed, wanted $50-$75 bucks to take apart. surely someone can give me an idea how to disassemble it to put it back into operation. I really need it!! a press is hard to do without.

thanks, kytim

Hi Kytim,
It would help if you could post a few pics of the ram, My guess is that it requires some type of spanner/gland wrench, Looking at the end where the rod comes out is there 2 holes or slots on opposite sides of the rod. If you do not have a spanner wrench you could fabricate one, I have made a few for different applications, For cylinders with 2 holes I used a piece of 3/16 plate shaped like a large Y and drilled and tapped 2 bolts of the correct size to fit the holes, If it has slots then I cut some key stock and spot welded to make the lugs to turn the cylinder seal collar.Spanner wrenches and gland wrenches are available for sale , Below is are a few links to show you what they look like.
