I have mine plugged into a "smart" outlet. That way, if i know i need to plow and am at work or whatever, I just turn it on through my phone an our or so before i need to crank her up.

Don't know which one you have, mines a WEMO switch. I love mine for my truck. I plug it in when I park and either set the timer or just turn it on when I need it.

Mine is a GoControl connected to Wink Hub. Works great!

Is there any harm other than wasted electricity leaving it plugged overnight so I can just wake up and plow before work?

No harm, other than electric use and the element MAY have a shorter life span. I use a cheap on/off timer, but I have to plug it in the night before. It comes on at 0200h and goes off at 0500h.
