I've wanted a weight box to counter weight the front loader when I had no other attachment at the rear, and had an idea what I wanted to build. I did post this build in the Attachments/Implements section also, as it seemed to fit there also.
I've been collecting all the steel barbell weights and Multi-Gym stacking weights I could get cheaply for awhile, and built the weight box around that. I had lots of short scrap angle steel, channel steel, and half inch plate at work, so built the rack itself as heavy as I could with what I had. The photos will show the build, being mostly 3" angle, channel steel cross pieces, with two pieces of half inch plate for the base floor, which hold the 10 pieces of 10 lb. stacking plates from a Multi-Gym. I made the upper brackets to hold the round steel barbell weights, having found 10 X 25 pounders, and a few 10 and 5 pound pieces also.
Rather than build and weld the bottom pins, I did buy a couple factory 3pt hitch pins, drilled and lock-nutted then on. The top pin bracket was fabbed from 2 pieces drilled 3" angle. Thinking of wanting to move the box around in my garage, I made tabs and installed 4 swivel caster wheels. I painted it all up before assembling the weights with Rustoleum Industrial paint.
When all was assembled, I wheeled it onto our platform scale at work, and the readout showed 544 lbs! This should be all the weight I'll ever need to offset the loader bucket work when I don't have the backhoe, tiller or rear snowblower attached. The 3pt. hitch picked it up at dead idle with no problem, so we are good to go.
