Rebuilt d902 3 cylinder engine, new injectors/washers, new good fuel/filter, air cleaner, head/gasket, cleaned/rebuilt injector pump (used existing shims)

billowing gray smoke on startup and thereafter, and a slight rattle around the #3 cylinder area of engine (used stethoscope but could not pinpoint location).
New oil and filter a week ago
Has good power

aby ideas of what is causing this?

disclaimer: governor and idler bolts are adjusted to get it running, but not sure how to adjust to get it smooth

Gdubs, the folks that know the most about this engine have not been logged in this weekend to comment on this or your earlier thread. Unfortunately I can't help. Is this engine in your Bobcat? Can you get a shop manual from Bobcat? Alternatively, go looking for a Kubota of about the same age and track down a shop manual for that. There is generally a good engine section that would have some of the information you need.

Who cleaned/rebuilt the injector pump? This piece of info might help those who know to offer their best advice. (I certainly am not one of them... :) ...wish I was...)

I did. There was a thread here with a link that gave good instructions on how to do it, and I consulted wuth the service tech from the company I bought the rebuilt pump from while I did it so as to keep the parts oriented correctly, etc

I have both the bobcat and the kubota shop manuals for this engine that I’ve been pouring over.
