Doing a few small projects and need some pressure treated wood. 4x4's any length are impossible to find and other dimensions look like they were kicked out of a wood chipper. Lowes will let me order online for delivery but want 150 bucks to deliver 4 - 4x4x8 pt along with 6 58x6/12 deck boards. I may be out there doing this build in December. Bonus, a lot cooler, don't have to worry about trampling the wife's plants and no bugs.

I never buy lumber from a box store.
They allow DIY people to pick thru it.
So it is always off grade. Find a lumber yard that focuses on builders. The yard I buy from charges 35.00 for a stick or a truckload.
2x12 pt, get them down fast, they will noodle.

Box stores and Carter / 84 lumber specialize in 'airplane wood'....... :D

Airplane wood is like a propeller, twisted and warped...

The cost of .40 retention has went through the roof everywhere. Expect it to not come down anytime soon.

Like supporting your Kubota dealer, support your local lumber yard, they will appreciate the business. The others, not so much.

I hear you. Tried to explain that I don’t need delivery, I have a truck but with the big box (Lowe’s) it was not negotiable. Money grab disguised as helping you out if you ask me

Last deck I built I had to use a farmers jack to get the joists lined up so I could screw to them and a come along to try and at least get the deck boards halfassed straight I guess everything molded it self cause its still up. And the juice just ran out of those boards

I like the 'juice' part. Most .40 retention lumber is green undried anyway. Why it's so heavy, it's loaded with sap.

I needed two 10' 2x6s in a hurry, so I went to Homer Despot and started looking for a couple that were usable. Found one I could not lift from one end. I wrestled it on a cart, wheeled it over to the bath section, and set it on the display bathroom scale. It weighed 62lbs.
About that time a manager type walked up and asked me what I was doing, so I asked him what he thought the moisture content of that board was. He was baffled, and then P.O.ed when I walked out and left it for him to restock. Went to Blowes and found a couple I could use. Wish we had a decent lumber company nearby. The only one that's relatively close only sells wholesale.

You might go to the store, I was seeing that also and just bought 4-
8' 4x4's pressure treated and 40 2x12's 8'
the last 8 2x12's I had to buy 16' because they were out of 8'

If the number of post holes I have dug for additions and decks is any indication, the demand will be there for a while yet.

As covid crushes some financially, others are doing just fine and the home time has spurred many many projects.

I have tomorrow off so I’m gonna go visit a few smaller yards and see what I can find. Need to build out my smoker table and get a couple of bat houses I built put up.

I have a huge stack of .40 retention boards and posts next to the barn under a tarp. 4-4's, 6-6's 5-4 deck planking and more. Have some 6-6's in marine contact too. Maybe I need to put the stuff on CL?

Must be a local demand thing... I have 100+ of treated boards just hanging around, and I just bought several lengths of treated 4x4's and 4x6's for a job I'm on, no issues here.

One note on the quality / dryness / grade of lumber, it's also a demand issue, demand is so high for lumber that mills have to pump them out at a phenomenal rate to keep up, they have had to cut drying time to a bare minimum.
I live within 50 miles of 15 mills and not a single one is anywhere close to slow.
Average trip to town I'll pass or be passed by 10 logging trucks.
There is also the issue of, you get better lumber out of large trees, well we are cutting smaller and smaller trees every year to keep up with demand.
Yea they is a little bit of the money aspect of it as turning out more lumber per hour makes more money, but i really don't think that's the real driving factor.

Most common big box store lumber is #2 bordering on #3
A lot of the mom and pop stores are forced to do bidding on lumber buys and then it's a crap shoot on what they end up with.
If you want really good wood pay a little (to a lot more) and get Select Straight (SEL STR) or gold standard wood, it will be large knot and twist and bow free (or at least very minimal).
In my house build it's all Select Straight and Gold standard wood, granted I did make a heck of a deal on 4 Bunks of 2x6x16 and 2x6x20 5 years ago which went way up in cost now.

Kind of the old saying, you get what you pay for! 😉

Here in eastern Canada pressure treated wood is getting scarce. We had a 18x18' deck started yesterday and the contractor had to go to four lumber yards to get enough material.

I was told years ago to buy 16" boards instead of 2 x 8'ers. Seems 16' and up are better quality or grade and of course most 'home handmen' can't wrestle a 16' long board !
lso if you're going to be using lumber in the futures, buy a 'lift' of it. yeah a hit on the wallet now BUT 1-2-4 months from now YOU have the lumber you need !
