I've got a gen set with a little kubota diesel.
Bit smoky for a couple minutes cold start when its cold (freezing). 9000hrs. Once it warms up runs smooth and clears up.

Anyone know which ngk glow plug fits this? I'm thinking it's the y103v

Thanks.

The number will be printed right on the glow plugs. It can probably be found in the manual as well. Smoke from a diesel after a cold start is pretty common.

Yeah I just didn't want to remove them until I had replacements.

This is excessive, almost like its got a cold cylinder at start. I know my mower won't start in warm weather if i dont cycle the glow plugs. (Same engine).

Ever seen a 7.3 powersmoke start with a few bad glow plugs? I know they use a different injection system.

Test them first.

1. Use a test light to check for power to each GP. Also check the GP's are powered while the engine is cranking.

2. A cheap multi meter. Remove the wire on each GP and measure its resistance from the electrical terminal to ground. Should be 0.9 ohms.

An NGK catalogue shows YE01 for D905 engine

With those amount of hours, I'd highly suggest checking the valve clearances too. A tight valve can keep a cylinder from making the heat needed, even with a working glow plug.

If you are not aware of how to check each glow plug, you have to disconnect each glow plug from its circuit. That is so you can isolate each plug from the others. If you have an OHM meter, check them with that and look for 1.5 to 3 ohms resistance.

Power generation company owned both towers, and the guys said all the maintenance was done (the workers had nothing to gain by the sale of these towers). All filters have hour markings too, and the fluids looked good. The one with almost 19000hrs started up so nicely I'd be surprised if it hadn't been gone through. Ill def check the lash adjustment, and meter out the glow plugs before I bother changing them.

Ill get some fresh fuel and a filter on it asap too
