How quickly should the glide shift.....shift? My new to me tractor, is a 25 plus year old 2550 dt gst. Yesterday I was using it to turn under the garden, and noticed while running on the lane to the garden, when going from 3 to 4 or 4 to 5, there might be a second or two hesitation or it may continue to run in the lower gear for a multitude of seconds before shifting up. Is this just somthing I need to account for with the age and time (1700 hr) of this tractor, or is an adjustment needed?

It's a design fault of older GST's, there is some adjustment in it,but it's very complicated and most of the time the results are not optimal.
It's not hurting anything being slow, it just annoying.
Fluid and filter changes sometimes will also help with speeding up the shift times, a good clean filter and a UDT or SUDT2 can make a huge difference in it's shifting.

Thank you wolfman! I just need to keep this in mind. I could see brush hogging a hill on the farm and need to come down a gear. I could see losing my momentum and having to back down and start again in the lower gear from the start. I really thought that the gst was designed and suited for speed changes on hills while mowing without losing momentum, now I know better. Thanks for keeping me out of trouble on this one.

If it's too great of a delay, you could get the WSM for it and go threw the testing just to make sure.
Mine is the next generation of GST after yours and I know they made some changes and improvements, but it's basically the same setup.
I have a very sight delay on up shifts but almost no noticeable delay on down shifts.
I'll send you a link to the WSM for the next generation models, I looked and they share the same adjustment procedure for the clutch timing.
