I am finally giving up on the sliding ring pto attachment. It appears not to be such a big deal to just change out the yoke for a push pin release type except. . . I can't seem to get the circlips out :(
My snap ring pliers are easily able to compress the clip but even when the ends are touching I can get the clip out of the groove to remove it.
Are there any tips I should know?

Someone may have something better but all I know is sometimes even with the ring fully compressed with the snap ring pliers you still have to get a sharp flat screw driver or something similar up under the ring to get the force to pop it out.

That was what I thought but it requires 3 hands :) Probably never going to see that ring again when it launches free

You can try to clean out the groove some so the clip will move further. I have used PB Blaster and a small screw driver (between the tangs) to remove the junk and rust.

You can try to drive it in a circle by tapping on one end of the retaining ring with a punch (SKA a screwdriver). Once it is rotating freely the pliers will usually get it out. You can also try driving the bearing cup in a tiny bit to free the ring.

Funny, I replaced my pin type with the sliding collar type.
Having it clamped in a vice, a selection of screwdrivers and bigger and bigger hammers sprinkled with a few cuss words got mine apart. It hasn’t been apart in a very long time and spent 20 years with grass growing around it, so it was in no mood to be cooperative. You need the right balance of patience and force, it’s an old snap ring, not a piano :)

Thanks Dan - I'll give that a try after soaking it in Mouse Milk
