I just rebuilt the gear box on the mower deck of my F2680E Kubota. When I bought it the deck had been run with the center blade bearing down so seals and bearings all the way up the shaft were spent. So when I disassembled it I also found the beveled gear set showed uneven wear like it had been run out of alinement, So I also replaced the $ 500.00 beveled gear set. Got it all put together and rotated the input shaft of the gear box it felt a little stiff to turn but smooth. Got everything assembled and added gear oil 85-90 sae. After mowing about 15 min. I check the gear box it felt very warm no smoke but very warm. My question is this normal ? I also over filled a little and I noticed that a little oil was coming out the vent screw. The deck on this mower is model RCK72P-F36. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Checking temp by touch isn't gonna tell you much. The gear box is gonna get hot. Best to check it with an infrared temp gun. It will give you a good base line to go by :) I would expect it to run around the same temps as a transmission. :) I run Lucas oil treatment which is the equivalent of pourable grease in my bush hog. Seems to run a little cooler then gear oil

I agree - the ol hand tells a lot - but best to put a real temp on it, those guns are cheap now - less than 20 bucks - worth their weight in gold !

Yup, and you can check the temps on the towers too :) then you know for sure your repairs good and a bearing isn't binding :D
