80W90 gear oil…. is the “Cheaper, …more available…. Overkill.”

(But since you stated you have some “Super UDT”…. as long as you have sufficient quantity…. you are permitted by Kubota to use that. I personally preferred 80W90 gear oil.
I'll go with the gear oil. (y)
Thanks everyone!

At the risk of continuing a meaningless debate:

Cheaper: $75/2.5 gallon of Kubota 80W90 - exact same price as SUDT2 (Messicks)

Overkill: As in the guy who had a vasectomy, wife had a tubal ligation, and he still wants to use a condom for the "extra contraceptive protection" it provides

Availabilty: You can get UTTO at any tractor supply or auto parts store. Usually right next to the SAE 80W90 and for considerably less $$$.

For this task…to ensure I had sufficient quantity… I purchased FIVE-gallons of 80W90 GL5 gear oil from NAPA for $52. I use it in several other pieces of machinery as well….which do not authorize UDT or UTTO (which has questionable pedigrees according to many “experts”)…. so I have other uses for it. I haven’t much use for extra tractor fluid sitting around.

YMMV depending on local costs. Visiting the TSC site…they list UTTO at prices which are actually UNavailable at the local TSC. The real prices at the local TSC are about equal for tractor fluids and gear oil.

Great - enjoy.

I went the other way and use a commodity UTTO in both my 1941 9N, 1951 8N, and 1987 (???) B7200DT. They don't worry about internet pedigrees. All they care about is the GL4 gear oil performance required for a UTTO.

The three Kubota hydrostats get SUDT2 because SUDT2 has well defined and (poorly) documented performance characteristics that afford meaningful and measurable gains in that application
