Firewood Lifting Capacity on BX

Here is a little more on my process when I can…sometimes based on the terrain and the machine I use I have no choice but to cut up in place (in that case I use a grapple to hold the log up…buts it’s extra handling through the complete process) But ideally, I move the logs with a wagon to a common location, then cut up in a rack, then place the cut pieces directly into the pallet. Moving to the common place to cut / split / stack is the best method for me…I think each of us probably has a little different process based on their set up and what works best for them.

Yeah if I had more property I would've considered a larger tractor. oh well next time.

Well the pic above with the grapple is a B. I had a BX before and used the same grapple / forks with BX and B. IMO I did not get much in capability moving to the B…it lifts a little more as a percentage but in reality when you look at lifting a log it’s not much more. The B has more ground clearance which is helpful. I use the B doing wood more than I do the MX actually. The B is very limited to what it pull comparatively ( and lift) though. But the B is also much handier in a lot of situations maneuvering with forks or a grapple.

I think you are on the right track to try to reduce the handling…I think how/when/where you move the logs will make more of a difference than a larger machine, unless you really want to stack heavy totes.

My B2650 forks can handle 1/3 cord green tamarack (western larch) per pallet rack I cobbled together with free wood pallets.

It cost my like almost forty grand moving from my B to an L4701. You can buy a lot of IBC totes to half fill for that kind of coin. Shoot, with the monthly payment alone I could buy nine clean empty totes per month!

Another vote for trailering, that's what I do when I move the wood from the "seasoning pile" to the "this years supply shed" yeah its more work but the tractor I have is the tractor I can afford and it will handle a fully loaded 4x8' trailer with 2 foot sides so it's a no Brainer. The time I may spend having to handle the material a second or third time is made up by the fewer trips , and again the machine I have is the machine I can afford so it's the machine I use

I was in your shoes once upon a time trying to move IBC totes filled with oak with my older B series. My method was using 3 point forks. 3/4 full was the max. I suspect the only way you're going to move them full with a loader is to bump up to a L series. That's what I wound up doing and haven't regretted it.

Yup.......I have had a true TLB for 37 years!
Don't use it much now (my age), but when it is needed,..... nothing else will do the job.

Considering the amount of wood you are trying to move at once i dont think there is any easy solution that doesnt involve a bigger tractor. You could bump the hydraulic pressures a bit but its not likely to change the game, just make what youre already doing a little less finicky.

When i think of lifting that tote full of wood to stacking height, im picturing a tractor almost twice as big as a BX. Do you have any space reasons to stay with a tiny tractor, or are you open to replacing the bx with something larger?

I'm 6'4'' and my lower back reminds me how much fun it is to get the bottom pieces out. I wound up shortening a lot of my totes for that exact reason. I don't think a good way exists without modifying the totes.

A big 10-4 on the trailer to haul and move wood, yes it is a little more work but my BX pulls a wagon full of wood she could never lift. And the bucket on the B works pretty OK too though I dont mind handeling my wood

If you put the tote on it's side, it's EASY to get the wood out.....
2 on their sides,full, on a mini farmwagon is easy to pull with BX series.
At 6'3", 'missing' discs between L3-L4-L5, that's why I was asking.
