Filters: Too tight vs leaks?

Just did my 50 hr service on B2650. I tried to tighten filters to spec per the manual. The two hydro filters had an overnight drip, may have been residual from taking filters off but I went ahead an torqued them a bit more. What is "too tight" and what issues will that bring up? This morning no drips. Oil filter was a bear to get to and reinstall due to routing of cables and tubing, had to flex some of those but got it in and tight and luckily no leaks there.
Engine oil sure was black for only 50 hours of light use. Is that just break in oil or a characteristic of diesel engines/oils? For the break in I tried to keep it around 2000 rpms, now that I over 50 hrs is that still a good working speed or should I up the rpms closer to max or max only when necessary?

As a rule diesel engine oil will turn black shortly after changing.

Usually once snug or bottoms out - a 1/2 to 3/4 turn is what some say on the filter itself. Unless you have massive hands, not sure you can hand tighten it too much. Sometimes you need to place the filter wrench on IT to tighten, just make sure it is snug and a little more.

Engine oil will get black QUICKLY with a diesel - like Red said, nature of the beast.

I would NOT run it at 2000 rpms, run it according to what you need, despite what people think - running a diesel at a high (rated) Rpm is a good thing!!! Running it low is NOT a good thing!

Now, if you are using a backhoe and nervous around your wife's car....then pull back on the rpms and the hoe will operate at a much slower pace.

Otherwise run it at a higher RPM - allowing the hydraulic pump(s) to operate at their respective rates. Also - any 540 pto will need about 90% or higher rpms to hit that mark;):)

Thanks for the replies, I think everything is okay for the start of winter.
Can you get the filters too tight and if so what is the resultant problem? I don't think I got them too tight, just snug and a bit more as Hokie said. To get them off I had to use a filter wrench, they were way snug from the dealer.

In my experience, factory filters are very tight - more than is needed upon replacement.

I have never been successful getting a filter off by hand only, even when I had a great two hand grip on it! I always have needed a filter "wrench" of some sorts, and then I needed a big ummmph to remove it. Sometimes the screwdriver though the filter body was needed! So most filters are too tight to begin with!;):)

Had a neighbor do an oil change on his car, started it & oil leaked from filter. He bought a new filter, put it on, and it leaked again. Turns out he was using the oil filter wrench to get it as tight as he possibly could, and it leaked. I backed it off, tightened it till the gasket just touched, then about 1/2 to 3/4 turn further, no leaks.
I always tighten them about as tight as I can with one bare hand, usually in some awkward place or angle. If it's in the open with good access, I don't reef on it quite so much, I'm sure I could over tighten it in that circumstance.

I use the same method.

Too tight is broke. Lightly dab oil on the oring face before install and they should be good. Residual drips are common with thin hydro oil.

You will find out if it was too tight the next time you do the oil change. Ive done hundreds of oil changes on forklifts and loaders and the only time I needed a filter wrench was when someone else put the filter on. That being said, I have been working on electric forklifts for the last 20 years and the Crown lifts need there hyd filters tightened about an 1/8 turn past hand tight otherwise they will leak.
