Explain to me

How someone can forget about 2,700 tons of NH ₄NO ₃. for over 6 years, and then have it detonate. As I recall that stuff is as stable as the day is long, until an oxidizer is involved and then it has to use a detonator to set it off. Seems very strange to me

Thought I saw something about a fire nearby in a fireworks factory or storage area. Would fireworks set it off?

Those big mortar fireworks sure will. My sons father in law got popped by one at a fourth of July party this year. He got some pretty nasty burns and some good bruising from the explosion.

I don't think they mentioned the fireworks factory fire on the news report I saw tonight. Or I missed it.

The NH ₄NO ₃ was seized from a ship, and the courts and judges had been passing the buck around, left it setting in the warehouse and never saw that it was used, or disposed of.
One report I read said that there was some welding or cutting being done that set off the fireworks and consequently set off the NH ₄NO ₃.
Amazing that the grainery close to the site was badly damaged, but still left standing.
With all the problems the Lebanese have, they certainly didn't need or deserve this.
