I have a B2910, and when I went to turn it on a month ago, some white smoke came out from under the dash, so I quickly turned the key off. I had just refueled and thought I had spilled diesel on something hot and it just vaporized, because when I tried the key again, there was no smoke and it started right up.

But, my battery just got weaker over the next few weeks, and finally stopped turning the engine over. The battery was OLD, so I bought a new battery, but that finally went dead too. I charged it back up and started the tractor, then checked the voltage across the battery with the tractor running at 2K rpm. It was 12.8V, so I don't think it was charging.

After reading the manual, I saw that the "Easy Checker" Electrical Charge lamp SHOULD come on when the key is turned ON, but it NEVER comes on. So...what does it mean when the "Electrical charge" light doesn't come on when the key is turned? Have I fried my "Easy Checker", or does it sound like the alternator/regulator, or what? Finally, is an electrical diagram available for the B2910? I have the parts manual, but that's not much help to me.

I know which end of a wrench to hold, and how to use a meter, but I'm not a mechanic, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

" I charged it back up and started the tractor, then checked the voltage across the battery with the tractor running at 2K rpm. It was 12.8V"

what was the battery BEFORE you cranked it up?

12.8 is low......what was it before the tractor was running?
Sounds like the alternator went south, or something else...........if you can turn a wrench , you might want to take the alternator out, and have it tested.

The B2910 should have a dynamo from the factory, the alternator cam as an option. Check under the hood on the left side if sitting on the tractor. It's a dynamo if its very small and painted the same color as the engine and an alternator if it looks like a smaller version of what's in a car.

The dynamo has two sky blue wires that run AC up to the regulator which is located under the instrument panel on the left side. There should be a six conductor connector that ties the regulator into the wire harness. The red wire carries 13-14 volts, the two blue wires carry AC from the dynamo, and the black is a ground. If you know how to use a voltmeter make the necessary checks and this will tell you if the dynamo is bad or the regulator is bad.

If you happen to have the alternator option just check the thick red wire coming off the alternator for 13-14.5 volts while the engine is running.

You are not charging. I suspect the smoke and no charge ligth means a power source (keyed) to the regulator is not there. A failed wire (based on smoke) or a blown fuse. 13.5 is about bare bones minimum you want to see to be charging.
