My L4630 came from Florida and I want to renew the lubricants in it starting with engine oil. The local dealer said 10-30 or 15-40.
I asked about synth oil and he was ambivalent saying that if the machine always had regular petro oil, changing to synth "might cause problems".
The machine has 2550 hours on it.
I have run Rotella 5-40 in my diesel cars and truck with no issues.
What say you?

Personally, I always use the best oil possible on my machines, and thats synthetic oil.

Think this through - have you ever heard of an engine destroyed when they introduced synthetic oils? I mean at that time all engines would have been using traditional oils, then - blam! that nasty synthetic was introduced!

I have heard a theory that detergents can clean gunk off an engine, which is bad (allegedly) because the oil pressure drops. I figure if gunk is holding your engine together you have other issues.

There is no problem with switching to synthetic. On very rare occasions synthetics may start to leak out a crank seal but very rarely. 2500hrs is not high hours.

I converted my L35 with 4200 hours to Mobil 1 when I bought it a year ago and have had no oil consumption, no leaks or any other problems.

My wifes 1986 Mercedes 300 SDL (daily driver) has been using Rotella since I've owned the car (12 years now). Two weeks ago I took the valve cover off for the 1st time since I've owned the car and found the head to be immaculate.

I won't be messing with this success.

One of my earlier Benz diesels had almost 500,000 miles running on Rotella as well when I sold it. Still driving around.
