I have a 98 B7300 with 124 hours on the tach. It sat virtually unused for the past 6 years with a full tank of stabilized diesel. The Kubota dealer that serviced it and installed a new FEL didn't think it would be a big deal to run the tractor on the old fuel for half a tank and then add fresh diesel. If this was a Briggs and Stratton, Id feel fine with that and add some SeaFoam for good measure. But even diesel fuel is different today than it was when this tractor was new.

Should I just drain the tank and start fresh?

Does anyone with an older machine add a treatment product to the local gas station pump diesel fuel?

Is there another place I should be purchasing my diesel?

Thanks

If it was 6 months, I would say run it, 6 years.....I would drain and dispose and fill with fresh. I might even add some conditioner - like a cetane boost, or a lubricator additive - most of the time you get both in the same bottle.

Your old diesel was 500 parts per million of sulfur, the stuff we use now is 15 parts! THAT sulfur had an added bonus as a lubricator - the new style pumps and injectors can handle the new stuff, BUT the older machines need the lube, I can hear the difference in running with current fuel with additive vs new fuel without. Biodiesel is great for lubrication......but most of these engines will not run well from 100% BD, adding 5% can help.

Here is a good source on the topic :

My opinion is to drain fuel clean out sediment bowl and start fresh. Is the gamble worth $20.00 worth of diesel?

Just to piggy back here, what additives do you guys run? I've been running straight pump diesel in my '83 B5100D, but feel like I should probably add something to it. Any specific ingredients and/or brands? This thing burns almost nothing so I'm not really worried about cost. Rather just put the best thing I can in the tank.

I use Power Service Diesel Kleen in the silver bottle for summer and the same product in the white bottle for winter. Here is their website.

Thanks for the input all.

Hokie - I read that exact article you linked which is what spurred my curiosity/concern.

Armylifer - The Power Service products are sold at my local Farm and Fleet. The highly rated Opti products are a little more difficult to get your hands on.

I'll drain the tank as you suggest and go through the fuel supply system to make sure there is no serious sludge buildup.

Try looking this up.
I have no way to add it to this thread.

I just went to use PEAK diesel fuel additive and added the 0 degree amount of 1 oz for 5 gal
I had read the package but was mislead by the chart on back.
Based on 0 deg
1/2 oz is the recommended amt for 5 gal.
Tractor has run OK for the hour I have used it.

I use this and I will say, the first time I added my wife jumped on the machine and said WTF. Its quieter and doesn't smoke anymore and is much more fun to drive.

YMMV. http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/fuel-additives/diesel/diesel-injector-clean/?code=ADFPCN-EA

The exact same product used to marketed as a diesel performance improver but they are trying this new marketing.

I also use this in my 2012 f250 6.7 diesel and I know every time I climb in whether the better half got lazy and didn't use it. I can actually say "You didn't condition the fuel did you?" and she will say "Don't bust my ....y for it, it was cold."

I wrote Gold Eagle to see if Diesel StaBil is compatable with anti gel additives.
I did not want to add a bunch of products to the fuel and diminish the fuel.
This is their reply:

Hello David,

Thank you for contacting Gold Eagle Co. STA-BIL® DIESEL is compatible with most other products including anti-gel additives. However, we do recommend making sure that the dosage amount for either product is followed. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Thanks for confirming that. I've been mixing diesel Stabil with the PS stuff for a few months now. I couldn't find any mention of the PS product affecting the longevity of the fuel. Stabil says not to over-treat, so I followed the "maintenance" guidelines when adding to play it safe. I think it was like 1/2 oz to 5 gallons. She runs well enough.
