I have an l2900 tractor with D1503 engine with hole in side of block, was wondering if it's possible to install a D1703-M-BG engine from a generator into this tractor? Any info would be appreciated

Actually they are the exact same block. You’ll likely want to inspect it first (if you’re thinking of buying it sight-unseen.)
The mounting-faces may differ where the tractor-engine mounts to the transmission versus how the gen-engine mounts a generator. The actual block-supports may also be different.
Additionally, there may be no provision for a gen-engine to support an alternator belt-drive as the generator may serve double-duty as the charging-circuit for the on-board battery.
All you need is the oil pan (possibly the pick up tube) and possibly the fuel camshaft, and the governor assembly, the rest of the parts are the same between the engines.thanks for the info, wondering if i could strip down to a short block and use my fuel pump, head, oil pan and so on, guess i'm asking if the block would be same outside as mine.
i did the same thing i bought a l2500 with a hole in the side, swaped out to a d1503 the big prob was it was splined shaft, i cut the center of it out slid the key shaft in there, no big deal , but i should of just swaped the fuel cams....all you need is the oil pan (possibly the pick up tube) and possibly the fuel camshaft, and the governor assembly, the rest of the parts are the same between the engines.
I'm not sure about the head as the valves might be bigger on the d1703, so no changing the head.
Technically no they are not the same block the d1703 has a larger bore, but they do have the same mounts and bolt patterns.
