Howdy,

I finally dragged home my new auction prize. It's a Kubota KH-27 excavator. I posted pics in a different thread:

The engine is disassembled in a box. From inspection, it spun a bearing. It's also missing the cylinder head, both manifolds, injectors, etc.

So, I either need to piece it back together or find another engine that will bolt in. My dilemma is, Kubota isn't very good at sharing which engines will interchange. I know they've thought about it because I remember seeing interchangeability as a selling point mentioned in one of their brochures but I can't find any other definitive info about it.

The original engine serial number is: D1402-BH1 1874

I've tried to reconcile what I have using Kubota's serial number chart without success. It'd be helpful to know the engine series, any specifics, and year if possible.

If I'm right, I believe I can swap in others from the 02 series. Hence a D1102, D1302 and a D1402 should all interchange.

But what about a D1403, D1503 & D1803? From digging, it appears Bobcat used both engines and tthe exhaust gaskets are the same. So it makes me wonder if the 03's are basically an updated 02 series? The problem is I can't find anything that would let me know for sure short of buying one.

Any help or thoughts would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

How does the pump attach to the engine, that will be the only thing that will determine which engine will work.

Agreed, which is why I'm trying to figure out if the bellhousing bolt patterns are the same between different engine series before buying one.

At this point Kubota is so convoluted regarding serial numbers that I haven't even been able to determine for certain which engine series the D1402 is.

There was a question there, How does the pump mount to the motor?

The engine is an 02 series engine.

02 series. Thx! Does that mean it's considered a Super Mini in Kubota's lingo? I can't find references to the 02 series on their website.

Sorry I neglected to answer your question! The main hydraulic pump attaches via its own adapter and bellhousing cover. I've attached pics.

I realized tonight that I *think* I have the engine from an L275 out in the yard someplace. Not sure if it runs but I think it might. (Bought the front end of a salvage L275 at one point a long time ago thinking I might need the engine for something). If so, it should have a D1302A. Any idea if it will bolt in? I fully expect I'll need to get the correct manifolds for an excavator from that era if the engine will bolt in.

I haven't been able to figure out what the BH1 stands for on my original engine. Would you be willing to decode it?

Finally, I've also attached a couple of pics of the original d1402 block and crank. Please keep in mind this is how I got it from the auction. They're actually not that bad and will clean up nicely I think. Just haven't gotten to it yet.

Thanks for your help!

Steve

No it's not a super mini, The super mini was the D722, D902.

Yes that bellhousing will fit quite a few models. and it will fit the D1302

The letters after the numbers mean how it's equipped.
You can use a -A motor in place of a -BH1 motor, you'll just need to change the throttle plate and the hydraulic pump block off plate.
The -BH1 probably has a different fuel cam with no provision for the Hydraulic pump bolted to the side, under the injection pump, but that will not affect the functional use of it.

Woohoo!!!! It would be fantastic if it bolts together as you say. I guess there's only one way for us to find out so I need to get to work. I also will need to figure out if the 1302 runs so I supposed I'll start there....

THANK YOU for your help!!!!
