Well in my little garden something has enjoyed all my corn, no tracks so it is either the burds or chipmunks! Anyways, I will replant but I was wondering something. Now since I will only be putting in 30 or so seeds, I was wondering what if I soaked the seed for say a day or so to re hydrate and then plant. My thought is it wouldnt have to wait for rain to get started and maybe get a bit of a start. What say you ?

Maybe wait for warm days forecast, soak seed (no more than a day), plant, and then immediately water entire area.
Should work?

From what I have read, you soak the seeds overnight, but no longer and then you get them into the ground the next day. I haven't tried it myself, so your mileage may vary.

Just in case you were wondering, I decided to ask the AI what you should do:

Generative AI is experimental. Info quality may vary.

Yes, you can soak corn seeds before planting. Soaking corn seeds overnight can promote faster sprouting. However, if you soak the seeds for more than 24 hours, you'll be excluding oxygen, which is another important element in the germination process.
Sweet corn seeds can appear shrunken and shriveled, and before they can germinate, they must slowly plump up with water. Soaking dry seeds in water at room temperature overnight before planting can help them along.
Soaking the corn seed also removes the fungicide. The seed must be planted immediately after the 24 hours. Soaking longer than 24 hours may encourage the seed to sprout prematurely, which is a waste of energy for the seedling if it's not in the ground

The Native American tribal people near me always soak corn seed before planting.

pre hydrating is a great idea.

are your seeds treated?

regardless place seeds between couple of sheets paper towel. preferred over dropping in a glass of water as completely submerging may wash away any pre treatment on the seeds and also prevent some air which seeds need.
corn hydrates fast so no need to soak longer than 1/2 day or so.

The birds kept getting our corn. Ending up buying a roll of 1/2" wire mesh and cutting ~15" squares out of it. Then I rolled the squares up to make a cylinder and placed that over the plant. Once the corn is as tall as the mesh, I'd remove them. No more issues with them being ate.

Back in the day I used to put my pot seeds in a wet paper towel and keep it moist for several days and then plant them and they would grow like Weeds

I think I'd want to know what ate all my corn before planting any more of it.

I guess soaking the seeds means they get to eat again that much faster. ;)

I think I agree with flintknapper on this one….I think I’d be setting up a stakeout with a top shelf bourbon, red light, and a smoke wagon of some sort, or minimally putting a game cam out…or buying some fence before doing to much more. Goonga galunga. 🥃

I dont soak my corn seeds, but do water every morning. My "Gotta have it" sweet corn has sprouted in 7 days! Once its a few inches high I will run my drip tape to water. I use it in both of my garden plots! Dripdepot.com

I've got a few thousand 3/8 steel ball bearings that'll work real good... Leftovers from the 'Great railgun project of 2008'
