Clutch slips in high range but not in low range

I have a Kubota M5700 utility special cab tractor with front end loader. It has the mechanical shuttle shift. When you are in high range and climb about any grade the clutch will start slipping but if you put it in low range it does fine. It was loaned out and came back this way. As soon as I noticed it doing this I changed the filters and fluid. I used Kubota filters and Kubota super UDT2 fluid hoping this would fix it but it did not change it at all. Does anyone have any ideas on what this might be? from what I have read it should not be the clutch packs but I do not know. It is used mostly as a rake tractor and to feed with. It has 1500 hours on it and I believe it is a 2005. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

Far as I know the only 'clutch pack' in a mechanical shuttle Utility Special is the PTO pack. Travelling speeds are mechanically clutched. If the free play in the clutch pedal is within spec (3/4" to 1") free play, I suspect a split is in order.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Never loan out my tractors to anyone. I believe you are about to learn that lesson.

Think I'd procure a WSM as well. You will need it.

Thank you Sidecarflip and eserv. I will look into that and see what I can come up with. Does the mechanical shuttle have a wet clutch like the hydraulic shuttle or is it a dry clutch? I thought both of them were wet. Thank you.

I agree free travel of traction clutch pedal needs to be checked. My guess is there is no free travel of clutch pedal which would allow throw-out brg to ride on pressure plate fingers lowering pressure applied to clutch disk.

The mechanical shuttle itself doesn't have a clutch, It is just gears with a synchromesh. The clutch you activate with your foot is the one that is slipping. Maybe you can get more life out of it by resetting the free-play, maybe not!

Thank you everyone for all your replies. I was told this thing had a wet clutch but it looks like it don't. I will check and set the free play and see if that does it any good. If it don't then it looks like I will have to split it and put a new clutch in it. Thanks again for all the replies.

Basically, once you break a dry clutch (like you did) under a load, it's toast anyway irregardless of the freeply or not because you spun the friction material against the steel facing of yhe pressure plate and flywjeel and glazed it, which is what your 'loanee' did by most likely being in a too high a gear for whatever they were doing

In as much you have a cab I'd have a dealer replace it and send your 'loanee' the bill for his negligence.

Only the hydraulic shuttle units have we travelling clutch packs, I own 2. I bought them purpose because they have no dry clutch to fail.

Spliyying a cab unit is complex. B est left to a Kubota dealer.
