Overhaul "what" exactly?

(and no, only as a last resort would I, regardless of your answer)

Presumably the engine.....but the OP didn't specify.

IF so....'kits' vary in completeness, but typically contain:

There could be a lot of 'Chinesium' in something like that.

Not ALL things 'made in China' are 'substandard'. helped a neighbour pull 350 out of his El Camino 5 years ago. It hung on the engine puller for TWO years, never dropped an inch, heck it didn't move. So SOME things are built GREAT !
Also the carbs on their 9HP Honda knockoff engine fit real Hondas 100% and run first pull ! $22 Chinese carb replaced $250 Honda carb, zero issues.

Correct, items from China 'can' be very well made (depending on manufacturer specifications).

But many, many items are not. Hence the reputation for 'Chinese Junk' that exists in not a few markets.

"Substandard" would be a most charitable term.

It just means that a turd really can be polished. Carbs aren't complicated and can be made out of cheap pot metal. I'd rather my wrist pins and cylinder liners to at least have some sort of quality control.
Sure, a reputable kit may have Chinesium parts. But they (should) be periodically checked by the company that puts their name on the box.

My dad taught me that there are two ways to do things:
Right
Or again.
Don't support a reverse engineering market staffed by slave labor.

The Chinese have enjoyed ONE reputation ever since WW2: They can COPY ANYTHING ACCURATELY!
I’ve had excellent results with chinese replacement parts.

A Chonda carburetor is a perfect replacement for a Honda carburetor, …etc etc.

Some of the Chinese can and do copy very well. And some can not copy anything with success.

  1. There is no reliable way of judging the quality of any overhaul kit sold online.
  2. Most if not all are coming from offshore sources.
  3. Direct sales from China are increasingly common and I have had good luck with the purchases I have made - mostly machine tool accessories.

I would consider buying a Chinese carburetor that could be easily changed if there was a problem, but not an overhaul kit that would result in another overhaul being required if something failed.

External Chinesium parts are worth the risk.
Internal Chinesium parts are not!
