Took a day off to go watch the BigBoy rolling West today. Impressive machine.

I'm thinking it was what all the people standing along the tracks for miles on Saturday as I drove North on I-55 North of Springfield, IL were waiting for.

I never did see it, but the tracks don't always follow the interstate, by the time I got to Bloomington there were no more people waiting ...

Any one know why they would have five modern engines behind Big Boy?
Normally, they are required to have at least one diesel in the consist for braking (they don't like using the Big Boy's brakes more than they have to, they're expensive to replace.) and PTC (Positive Train Control). When it went east, it had one of the repainted SD70s in addition to the SD60 in standard Union Pacific livery, so they obviously picked up the other three units somewhere out east. My WAG is that those units were out eat being repainted and are headed back to Nebraska to UP's shops. But I could be wrong.

kids and I went down to Holden MO to see it steam by. pretty cool to see up close!

I don't have facebook but in the discussion tab, the first video posted, you can see us on the other side of the tracks, to the right of a gravel pile in front of Mrs. Bee's silver yukon. 😁
