Does anyone here run a 3pt hit generator? We need a generator for power outages and such, and I was wondering if using the bx was both possible and feasible? Or should just go out and get a generac for that sort of thing?

I have been down this road, and asked the same question as you,,, SO with that in mind let me tell you what I did,,, I have an old 5kw gen set with a tucumsa motor (sp) and it runs well enough but is limited,, I found a 12 kw PTO at a yard sale the manufacturer is unknown. Now running off the PTO I can in the best case get like 9 kw out of it,,, 2hp per Kw is a good rule of thumb. Yes they both work but the gen set doesnt get used as much due to the PTO,, Some guys will say why do you want to run up the hours on yoru tractor,, if you are like me you bought it to use for what you need. Now as far as the stand by, them things are the catsass !!!!! And if thats all your going to run is the house and maybe an out building go with something like the Genarac 12 or 15 Kw with the auto transfer switch, you will love it. But if you need power out the ridge some place then I would opt for the PTO,,, this is of course just MHO,, keep us posted OHHHH and pictures we lovs our tractor porn :D

yes it is possible .......but there are problems.....

one - the amount of diesel fuel will be wasted on the BX.....you will have to run the BX at a RPM that will spin the genny at IT's magic number.

The cost of a PTO driven generator will be $$$$$ too!

Best to invest in a stand alone version, and use the BX for other great things!:)

I have a 13KW generator that I used on a 28HP blue tractor PTO powered. Made a support bracket so I could take it any place. For instance ran a chain saw on a long pole for high branches trimming, run a welder, etc.

However, now the blue guy is gone and I have adapted it to a BX. No, won't get the same KW out of it, but, for the seldom need for power outages, I'd not worry about the fuel cost. Lugging around the same KW capability stand along generator would not be fun.

I liked the portability of it. For instance when a neighborhood shared water well needed power, it went there very easily. I'd think about how yu use it, rather than fuel cost.

I looked into it. Went thru 4 outages in 3 years, 6 to 22 hours each. I started off using my portable 4kw camping gen to power appliances. Problem was, seems to be extreme weather. Severe thunderstorms and 1 was tornadic, another in the middle of winter. Nothing like getting the cords out and having the doors cracked open beacause of the cords. So getting the tractor out in the pouring rain with lightning or in the dead middle of winter just doesnt cut it. So 3 years ago, bought my retirement ranch house in the country with an outbuilding, still gotta work another 20 years. This year installed a standalone Generac 22kw with 2 auto transfer switches to power the house and outbuilding. The 4 outage was for 9 hours and was great to be able to run everything, while staying dry :D

The biggest problem with PTO generators is the lack of regulation, your voltage and frequency can wander a lot as different loads come on and go off. Your electronic products don't like that, and something's will just fail. The biggest plus to using the tractor is that you use it more often, so the engine gets run, whereas many gensets sit too long and then balk when you need them. I have a Pto unit, and a Lincoln Ranger generator welder. I weld fairly often, so the machine gets used more, and it will power my well, electric water heater, etc. It saved the day after Hurricane Sandy. Having a PTO generator is much better than having no generator, and we don't have that many power outages around here, so I can't justify the cost of an automatic setup.

Yeah.... I would have thought the bx25 would have been enough to run a generator, but after further review, it is not looking like a good platform.

What fuel source do you use for your 22kw generator?

Propane, I switched suppliers and they ran the line to the generator for free and gave me a 500 gallon tank that I wanted. Had a 250 gallon before but wanted a little more cushion. Old supplier would not give me a bigger tank and a charge per foot to run the line. I figured it may give me about 10 days and/or better if I manually shut it down periodically. No natural gas in my area yet but these new generators just has a manual switch to run between the two. Currently the only other thing in my house that runs on propane is the cooking stove. Too dependent on electricity but I also have geothermal, no choice.
