Bx23 purchased 2003. My steering goes in and out and I've already determined I need a new steering corner cylinder which I acquired. In removing the old cylinder, can

1) can I just unscrew the end caps by bracing one end with a wrench?

2) will I need heat to break the caps loose?

3) I have memory of seeing the need for threadlocker, maybe even red threadlocker.

Other suggestions appreciated.

Yes, you can break one side loose by putting a wrench on each of the inner tierod assemblies where they are screwed into the chrome shaft. You can then use a pipe wrench on the chrome shaft to backup breaking the other side loose.
The inner tie rods should have Red Locktite on them when reassembled.

The two wrenches got one nut off but I can't get near enough grip with a pipe wrench, or my locking pliers, to get the other one loose.

My plumber buddy says I have $hit tools and is going to hook me up. We'll see if I have the skills to match the tools.

So, i didn't do any better with his pipe wrench. I tried doubling up on the vice grips but that didn't help. Im thinking of maybe grinding a flatish place on the cylinder to get more purchase.

I have used a handheld propane torch on the end of the chrome shaft to release the thread locker, which makes unscrewing it easier.
Is the side that broke loose the end of the steering shaft that has very narrow wrench flats on it? If it is, you can unscrew the inner tie rod enough to get a wrench on it, snug the inner tie rod up to clamp the wrench in place, and unscrew it that way.
Going back together is easy as you can just put a wrench on each of the outer tie rod ends and snug it up.

Got things apart. Do I need something on the hydraulic line fitting like teflon tape or threadlocker?

looks like some on the HORIZONTAL end..... NPT, the vertical one looks like a 'flare' fitting so NO tape.
AND...it is pretty much accepted that it is wise to use pipe sealant paste on HST tractor hydraulic fittings when something is required, as Teflon tape offers opportunity for a piece to get into the system and damage the HST.

I assume this is more than an urban legend...and I follow this advice always...better safe than sorry approach.

So upon examining the steering cylinder after assembly, I do see access to the wrench slots on the one end of the cylinder. It would take a thin wrench, but im sure one could be found.
