I have a BX2230 with less than 2000 hours on it. While using it the other day, I noticed a puddle of engine oil under the motor. After removing the engine cowling to be able to see, it appears that the oil is squirting out around the front main seal. Has anyone had this problem, and is there something more serious than a bad seal, such as excessive blowby past the rings? Also, is there a front cover on the engine that must be removed in order to replace the seal, after the engine has been removed? Any help will be appreciated.

Lets be real clear on what your calling the "front seal", are you talking about the rearward facing crank seal?

The seal leak is on the crankshaft on the water pump end of the motor, not the flywheel end. The motor is mounted backwards in this model. Thanks for the reply.

That's why I wanted to clarify because I know the motors mounted backwards.

If you have enough room to be able to lift and pull the motor forward after removing the mounts and other parts, and still be able to get to the shaft end, the seal is pretty easy to get out and replace.

Thanks for the help. I was particularly worried about getting the seal out after gaining access to it.
Thanks again,
Port

In the process of assessing how much it was going to take to remove the motor, I noticed that the fan belt alignment between the fan and the crankshaft pulley was misaligned about a quarter of an inch. After looking further, I discovered that the crank pulley retaining bolt had come loose allowing the crank pulley to move forward. Since the seal surface for the front seal is on a sleeve attached to the crank pulley, there was no way for the seal to hold in the oil. Fortunately, you can disconnect the driveline and move it far enough to the side to get a socket on the bolt. I dodged the bullet on this one!!!
