My 1970 BX22 starts immediatly with the key in the start position. It will run as long as the key is held in the start position. It stops immediatly when key returns to run position. I tried a new ignition switch --no change. What else can I check.

Sounds like you have a problem with the solenoid that shuts the tractor down, or more specifically to yours, allows it to stay running.
You need to look at a wiring diagram to be sure how it operates but it sounds like it holds the fuel on when the key is in the start and run position. In your case, the start position is supplying power and it operates but it ceases to hold the fuel on in the run position.
Assuming the new key switch you installed is operating correctly then you can search out the fuses and any relays involved with the power supply to the fuel solenoid and repair that. I believe you can use a test light or multi-meter to be sure power is at the solenoid terminals in both key positions to be sure that is your problem. You may be able to test actuate the solenoid on the work bench to see how it operates.
(And if your BX22 was built in 1970 then it might be a unicorn and not have this. I don’t think they were made at that time.)

Can you post a picture of the electrical starting diagram? I think your model has a timer 'kill' solenoid.
Pull the connector off the stop solenoid. How many wires are there? Try starting the tractor with the connector off. If it starts, it won't stop with the connector off - you'll have to reconnect it or pull the knob on the dash, if there is one.

Yep problem with the run solenoid run circuit or the solenoid itself.
Check the 20 amp fuse, if blown replace and if it blows again it's a bad solenoid or (rarely) bad wiring.

The BX 22 is essentially the same tractor as my BX 2200 but the BX22 came with a loader and backhoe installed as a package
It has a solenoid that has two coils. The symptom you describe is identical to what I had with my BX2200 when I had a bad solenoid. The problem was when you initially start the tractor there is a coil that is strong and pulls the solenoid away from the rack in the injector pump and allows fuel to flow in the pump. The second coil is always energized when the key is in the on position, but it’s only strong enough to hold the solenoid in the run position after the start coil of the solenoid does the work make the movement required. If the hold coil goes bad, or the wire to it gets broken or something, the tractor will start normally but as soon as you let the key return to the own position the engine will shut off.
The solenoid is easy to replace and can be removed easily if you want to verify that it is a problem is with the solenoid. If you remove the solenoid the tractor will start but it will not shut down unless you physically hold the solenoid back in position so that it shuts off the fuel at the injector pump.
I bought a cheap replacement solenoid off of eBay and it’s been working fine for several years now. But there have been reports where others bought the cheap solenoid and had problems.
There have been a few threads here at OTT over the last few years addressing this specific issue. Perhaps you can find one for more details…
