As I am refurbishing my BX1800, I decided to change out the HST fan because the step was removed and I had easy access to it; the engine is also removed, so I decided to take out the drive shaft because the boots were cracked on it.

I am glad that I did this because I noticed that the CV joints at the drive shaft ends had pieces missing. For example, according to the WSM, there should be a small rubber washer underneath each ball in the CV joint (Paul Short shows this in a great video); mine did not have any. Further, there should also be a spring in the cup part of the CV joint; mine did not have those either.

At any rate, I have the parts, and I'm about to reassemble it. Is there any special process or technique to greasing the CV joint as I reassemble? Should I try to keep the splines on the drive shaft clean of grease, or just grease it all? Do I need a special bearing grease for this? I have not found any guidance on this and would appreciate any tips you might have.
