I have a new to me BX 23s and have had a few hours on the BH ....a friend convinced me to change the controls to "CAT" controls , so I did. I am not sure it was a good idea as I was getting used to the factory setup.....question, is there any disadvantage to the CAT setup? I mean once i get used to it? Is the factory valving setup to "prefer" one or the other setup? or just operator preference?

Operator preference mostly. But I have heard letsdig18 on youtube say, cat controls work both hands evenly, where John Deere is mostly right hand work.

"CAT" I believe is usually prefered on larger excavators where as TLB (Tractor/loader/backhoe) controls are sometimes refered to "John Deere" control setup. My Kubota BX23s comes from the factory with "JD" setup.
I understand that most larger equipment comes with a valve switch so you can switich between setups quick and easy like. I had to swap two sets of H hoses.

Yes indeed! You are in Greensville? I grew up in Stoney Creek and learned my trade at Boonstra's :)

Matt, I've seen this very same image before and I can tell you that it is incorrect. It's the exact opposite.

ISO (CAT) pattern puts the stick/dipper control on the left, boom on right.

SAE (John Deere/backhoe) pattern puts the stick/dipper on the right, boom on the left.

...just sayin

It looked odd. I am use to JD controls myself.

It's on the internet, it has to be true!

I recently bought a backhoe for my B2620 and am thinking of doing the same and switching it to Cat controls. I run a Cat 330GC and thought it would really screw me up coming home and running my Kubota, but so far I seem to have gotten used to both.

Like my boss at the mine said "as long as you can run the one I pay you to run, LOL"

Most excavators you can change control patterns but I don't want to do that. I want to stay used to Cat controls, because some big mines and the oil fields prohibit you from switching. They want everything to stay Cat control so that if someone jumps and the machine and you have it switched they can end up killing someone.

Thanks, I've had this TC for over 25 yrs, it is only 10 hp but does about 50 mph and surprisingly fun to ride. Unlicensed as I just go around the block when I need some two wheel "therapy".

Get used to one or the other. As a home owner/private use it probably makes no difference.

I bought an old Kubota mini ex which has a switch, to change from SAE to ISO. I changed it to match my Kubota tractor backhoe. Works for me.

If I were an equipment operator, I would naturally want to use whatever pattern was most common where I might be working. But I am not, so it doesn't matter at all.

My friend who suggested to change the pattern to CAT was an equipment operator for many years and claims that the CAT pattern is just a little more intuitive. Of course he recognizes that whatever you are used to is the way to go. Being new, I want to learn the easy or more efficient pattern before I learn either pattern and get set in my ways :)
