Hey all,

I've looked around at info about tearing down a cylinder to replace the seals but have yet to see anything that looks like the ones on my early 80s B8200. I see no holes for a spanner, no lock ring or anything to grab onto to remove the end. Who out there knows the secret?

Thanks

Thats an old BF 300 loader, they used a circlip on the end, it had no ends, just encircled itself, clean out the end real good and get a small screwdriver and start digging at the very end, you'll destroy it to get out, just to let you know.

Thanks Big Kahuna! Never would've figured that one out on my own.

To be clear, I'm digging in the outer groove (just inside the cylinder wall)?

I picked up a seal kit from Messicks. If this one goes well I'll be in the market for 3 more.

Ah! Now I see it! And I see that the kit has a new one. It's obviously been a good long while since it was visible. I can tell it's going to be a bit of a job to pry it out. Which begs the question... How's the new one go back in? Just set it in the groove and tap it into place?

Thats why I said you'll destroy the old one, they are not reusable.
To put the new one in, it's like threading a key onto your ring, just start one end in the groove and work your way around, an extra set of hands help and some silicone spray, you can do it.

Any more ideas? I have the groove well cleaned out and can see the clip well enough to see that it is a little different than Big Kahuna describes. The clip does not come back on itself. It's about 1/4 inch shorter than the circumference and sits fully down in the groove. The new one in the kit looks to be the same design. No amount of digging has even begun to pull it out. I have destroyed a screw driver but cannot get underneath it. If I put a nail on one end of it, I can drive it around the groove with a hammer but can't get any purchase to pry it out.

Frustration is growing.

Push the inner gland down into the cylinder to expose the round snapring. dig it out and pull the cylinder apart.

Is there a particular technique to doing that? Tried by pushing the rod in and hitting the end of the glad with a bolt and hammer. Have hit it hard enough to start to flatten the end of the bolt. Is it my method? Is this a job for a BFH and a bigger bolt or will I damage things too much?

They can be pretty tight, remember it has been in that position since the loader was new! That is the way they come apart though!

You wont push the gland down its on a shoulder, take a chisel and try and cut it, a dremel with a carbide burr, your right its been there a long time.

If you don't push that gland into the cylinder enough to expose the snap ring then you will ruin the cylinder trying other methods to get it out! The snap ring is trapped in it's groove until the gland is pushed in.

Well, seems to be differing opinions.

I have tried to drive it down with increasing force, and I have yet to see the slightest movement. And believe me it has been hit hard.

Its designed that when the gland is down you put the circlip in, you dont have more than 1/32 of space, movement, try taking an awl and dig into the clip and pry it out, go to the meaty side of it and try to push toward the opening of the clip, it needs to collapse on it self.

As Big Kahuna wrote, it doesn't go in a long ways, just enough that the snap ring is untrapped .

I ground a grove behind the ring to get access to pry it out. Sorry I dont have pics. Those kits are god awfull expensive. I ended up replaceing my cylinders with aftermarket ones for just a little more than the kits cost. (After they started leaking again)

Thanks for the continued input guys. I appreciate it.

So maybe I've already moved it as far as it will go and just need to concentrate on finding the right tool to get under it. I'll dive back in tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

bandaidmd, I got the kit from Messicks for $100. But talked to a local hydraulic shop and got the impression that it could run $4-500 + to have them do it. If it went well. You know how shops hate guessing.

Bandaidmd, do you have the specs on the replacement cylinders (or part numbers)? Starting to think you hit it on the head by going with new rams but I'm having a hard time finding the right ones. I've talked to Surplus Center and a kubota dealer and no one can tell me what fittings are on there. I measured everything else.

Thanks
