B7510 HST Fuel Filter

I go to change the fuel filter on my B7510, the filter bowl with the filter element unscrews and comes off no problem but the element will NOT come out of the bowl. It's in there tight, there's nothing for pliers to grab, there's no lip to lever it out, I ended up jamming a screwdriver through the slots on top and wedging it out. The new one went in with a snap fit so it's going to be the same. The manual just says "take out the element", am I missing something, is there a trick to it?
Also, the manual shows two O-rings, and there are two on the old filter but the new one only came with the larger one. Are you supposed to reuse the small one or buy a new one or....

Re-use the old o ring, and I usually use a pair of needle nose pliers to take the old one out.
