On my B7100 the PTO has a difficult time engaging in 2nd gear and will not engage at all in 3rd.

Everything works fine in 1st, but has trouble engaging in 2nd followed by a chatter.

Any suggestion on where to start to begin diagnosing this issue would be much appreciated.

Thanks

It could be as simple as lubrication of the shift shaft and linkage.

It's not like you can count on splash lubrication.

If your clutch is not fully disengaging it will cause the symptoms you describe. Does the transmission grind also?

Sounds like you are in store for a transmission tear down, I'm going to say your most likely candidate is a failed bearing in the PTO main shaft.

That’s not the answer I was looking for but I feel we are in the right ballpark. How do I further diagnose the problem, where do I start and how much of the tractor has to come apart? Do you know if any videos or diagrams to help me along?

Thanks!

Go to Kubotabooks.com and download the three part WSM (service manual).
On that model splitting it at the motor and working back is the easiest.
Most parts are light enough to be able to easily handle, never force anything to come apart as Kubota's are tolerance fit parts , Parts never pressed into a housing.
