I just bought my son a B6100, probably from 1977. Its serial number is 16646. It came with a K-48 mid mount deck. Here are the issues I am tackling: battery is sulfated (trying to condition it and bring it back), the seat is torn (off to the upholsterer), the rear tires are shot (tube is showing, so replacing), key is broken off in the ignition (locksmith got it out), decompression cable is stuck and broken(ordering a new one), no battery hold down(ordering a new one), steering has slack in it and it is stuck in 4WD. The last two are the worrisome ones. I will pull the steering box to see if it has the typical water damage. The 4WD shifter is loose on its shaft. I figure the roll pin is broken. The PO said it was very hard to shift before the shifter broke loose. I think the next step is to pull the cover off of the transmission and see why it is shifting so hard. There must be something wrong with the shaft and/or fork. Anyone have any other ideas?

The 4wd shifter may have a broken roll pin; I had a tractor with that same trouble. The root cause was an accumulation of dirt, spider webs, and other debris up underneath the chassis that was causing binding. A thorough and repeated saturation with penetrating oil and bristle brushes cleaned that all out, and new grease got things moving smoothly. A new roll pin remedied the flopping shifter. The roll pin is metric, so may be a bit tricky to find, but they're out there.

The fork on my machine was engaged by a simple C-shaped piece of 5/16 rod welded onto the shifter shaft, and the previous owner had actually bent it trying to force things. Be careful.

The steering box should have an adjustment to take play in the box out. Make sure the ball joints and bearings in the box aren't sloppy. Good luck!

284 International, I hope it is what you had. That would be much easier than going into the transmission.

Where is the adjustment on the steering box?

Thanks for the info.

300zx,

That's odd. I just bought my Dad a B6100D, same year I think, to enjoy fixing up for me.

I don't understand, are you fixing it up for him or you?

Since I have retired, I have found that I spend more time working for my kids and grandchildren!! I do get a lot of satisfaction out of it.

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are....:D:D

All kidding aside, 300zx doesn't the B6100 have an adjustment nut on the right hand side of the steering box like the 7100??

You are right HickoryNut, the rubber plug had me fooled. The adjustment is there.

284 International, it was a similar problem to yours. I pulled the cover off the transmission and found that the lever and fork were working fine. What seemed like a loose shifter was just the fact that the detent ball had come out of the shifter and it would not stay up in 2WD. I knocked the roll pin out of the shifter and found the detent spring had rusted in place. When the PO forced the shifter from 4WD to 2WD, he not only bent the handle, he lost the ball and at that point the shifter just flopped up and down. Since it fell down into 4WD, he thought it was an internal problem. I got the spring loose, straightened the handle and put a round headed screw into the spring for a temporary fix for the detent ball. It works fine and the ball and spring have been ordered. It has been delivered to my son and he is happy.

It sounds like you got it resolved. If you're like me, you'll probably end up with that spring and detent ball gathering dust in your toolbox, since the field repair works fine! :D

Your son will have a nice little tractor to use. I like the mid-mount mower. I wish I could find one of those.

I am very happy. I've only mowed with it once, and it certainly does the trick with that. Getting new rear tires tomorrow and hopefully a drawbar / reciever hitch so I can do some small hauling jobs around the house. If it rains, I'll be working on the wiring system. Maybe paint for the fenders and seat are next if I can find the "Kubota" decal for the back of the seat.
