what are the options for a b6000 steering box rebuild. working on my fathers tractor that he purchased used and abused for $500. the replacement parts are hard to find and some are obsolete as this is the older style steering box with the worm gear. wondering if anyone has converted their tractor to use a different steering box( tractor, automotive, ridding lawn mower, etc) the bearings went out and chewed up the steering shaft a bit at the shoulder where the top bearing rides. and the gears on the cross shaft show some wear. i was thinking about resurfacing the shoulder where the top bearings ride and reassembling everything else with new bearings, seals, shims(extra to make up for new shorter shoulder to shoulder dimension on steering shaft), gasket and bushing. my father wants to find a steering box from a small car that we can adapt the tractor to use. this way replacement parts would be available, and you wouldnt have to worry about the wear on the gears on the cross shaft causing any future problems(obsolete part). let me know what you guys think and if you have any alternate ideas. thank you all, you have been helpful before
