B2601 WOT lower revs than it used to be

My B2601 used to run 2,800 revs at WOT (maybe a little more). It now runs around 2,600. 2,800 is where the PTO revs mark is on the rev counter - i.e. it's supposed to run 2,800.

I think it's something in the throttle cable or throttle linkage or somewhere. It runs up to 2,800 revs if I hold the hand throttle open, but when I let go it springs back a bit, and runs at 2,600. It also does it when not moving, and not running the mower (i.e. when not under load). So I don't think it's load or something, I think it's just something in the throttle linkage out of adjustment or sticking a bit.

I've had a quick look, but haven't had a good look yet. Thought I'd ask if this is a known/common problem, or if anyone already knows exactly what I need to do to fix it. Failing that I was going to clean and lube everything that looks related to the throttle linkage and see if that sorts things.

So of course, I got a bit of spare time and went out to look at it after I posted this. And I started it up, WOT, and 2,800. Argh. So engaged the mower, perhaps it's mower load. 2,800. So maybe it is backing off when warm (I can check that next time I mow), or maybe it's stopped doing it. Sigh.

Accept your win - however temporal it may be.

I recently heard my mountain bike's bottom bracket ticking every time I rode it. I bought the required socket/BB tool in anticipation of having to replace it. Of course, it stopped ticking - that was two months ago.:)

But you have the tool for when you need it. :) My better half bought a new mountain bike, and suddenly was right up my behind every time we went out riding. So I had to buy a new one too.

I suspect it will do it when I run it longer - it's been refusing to go to full revs for a couple months, and was doing it when the better half mowed the lawns 3 days ago. I presume it has more friction when cold, and when it warms up is backing off, but I'll see when I next mow. My back is playing up at the moment, and doesn't like me being on the tractor, so it'll be a week or so.

There is a You tube video done by "My Cluttered Garage" on that very subject with his B2601. As GreensvilleJays picture shows that was his problem.

Excellent, thanks guys.

I mowed the lawn today. It ran at 2,800 revs the whole way. No idea why it's decided to start operating properly again, other than it perhaps felt threatened when it heard I'd asked for advice.
