Found a used tiller for a good price. It’s not a Kubota. Are the connections to the PTO universal? How do you find out the length of the shaft required to fit my BX? Thanks

I can’t speak for all, but many non kubota brand implements pto shaft will work just fine…at least the ones I have do. Unless something unusual it’s should fit I suspect. (I’ve never bought an implement where I was asked the brand trsctor so it nascent it’s common)
as far as figment I would watch a video online regarding trimming a pto shaft…EA and our buddy Ted used to have a pretty easy to follow….key point here is it will share/show how to measure and check for proper length. (It’s worked for me multiple implements and no concerns).

PTO attachments are universal for the speed of the PTO.
I would assume most of the tractors that get discussed on this forum has a 540RPM PTO. I would guess, but don't know it for fact that most cat 0 and cat 1 PTO attachments would be 540RPM. attachment
Yet when you start getting into the utility tractors and larger, they can be 750RPM or 1,000 RPM, which can require a different spindle on the PTO shaft.

As far as fitment length of a PTO shaft it has to be a fit between the implement and the tractor. It may or may not work on any other implement with the same tractor. The same implement on some other tractor may also not use the same PTO shaft length.
Do watch videos from the manufacturers on how to cut the shaft length properly because you can damage the tractor or implement if they are too long or kill the operator if they are too short and separate.
Basic process is to mount the implement without the PTO shaft and measure the distance from the tractor shaft to the implement shaft. Then move the implement into other positions (full up and full down and level with the shaft on the tractor) and find out how long that distance can be and how short it can be. If the implement can go below ground (like a tiller) the tractor can be raised up by driving the rear wheels up on solid blocking.
Just remember that the PTO shaft ends will slide onto the tractor shaft and onto the implement shaft so take that into consideration when making the decision on how much to cut.
Then the plastic shield is removed and the length of the PTO shaft and cover are adjusted by removing length from center overlapping portion of the shaft. There needs to be a few inches of over lap at the longest possible length and the shaft should be able to have a few inches more to collapse at the shortest length. Cut same length off the two sides of the plastic shield.
Before installing the plastic shield it is a good idea to install the PTO shaft and slowly move the implement to the two extreme positions and make sure that it it cut correctly.
It sounds a lot more difficult than it really is.
Since you are buying a used implement with an already cut PTO shaft you could just take the cover off and start looking to see how long it can be with six inches of overlap and how short it can be when completely collapsed. Compare that to measurements taken above and you may just be able to use it as is.

The rule that I generally use with regard to pto length when new is that there is just enough rearward movement to attach the front spline onto the tractor PTO shaft when the shaft is perfectly horizontal. If attaching a used piece of equipment to your tractor for the first time and there is plenty of space between the pto and the tractor spline just make sure there is enough overlap in the shaft.
