The Ash borer is one of the killers, the Asian Long Horn beetle is the one that kills the maple trees. No maples. No maple syrup. We need to send something over across to thank them for the bugs that kill our trees and the virus that kills our people.

Are the long horn beetles in Maine? If the maple, ash. oak and elm die off there will not be much left for hardwood. maybe I will plant basswood or butternut if I can find them.

To date none have been discovered in either Maine or New Hampshire. The fear is that the Worcester, MA colony was established for so long undetected that it was likely that something made its way up on somebody's firewood.

Good to know I was thinking of planting some oak trees. I have lost so many spruce trees and they uproot in the wind storms so I thought if I planted something with a tap root it may give the spruce a chance. Thats not good on a clear day I can see the Maine coast from my front yard .. Maybe I should go into politics. :)
the intense itching is absolutely the worst. As caterpillars they have thousands of microscopic hairs any one of which can cause a nasty reaction. Of course they're everywhere all over everything which is nice.
I hear the Cat ferry is back this year. I may have to make a run and stock up on some Schooner!

Worcester cut down all the infected trees and incinerated every last piece of the wood in an attempt to eradicate them. Haven't heard about any new ones being detected in years.

I had heard the trees in Worcester were chipped and haul to the bio-mass plant in Tamworth New Hampshire dumped on the ground there and burned in the power plant. Would I be shocked that the goverment would haul a invasive bug to another state and give it a chance to infect elsewhere ? No.

And if the ash borer among other pests isn't enough we have
the Wooly Adelgid spreading in the Eastern Hemlocks here too.
As far as Elms go, mine don't get very big before they die, 8-10"
DBH would be a big one.
So far my 1/2 doz ash trees are holding
out OK.
Another Spruce Budworm outbreak could be in the works here also.
