I 'get' how compressing air squeezes he water out but a intercooler would have to have an auto drain, right?
Got any links to a rationally priced intercooler?

yes, you have to plumb in another filter/ water trap/ drain. Other PC had a lot of 'links' about it . Slick one uses a GMC air conditioning 'rad' and a fan. Just use google. You can buy $$$$ kits or just make your own for $ or free.
Using one greatly reduces the amount of 'dryer pellets'.

I got the dryer almost 20 years ago along with a venerable old 240V 3PH Wayne compressor and never installed the dryer. Its rougly 3' W' x 2' D x 3' H and I believe it and the compressor came from a defunct service station. It has a 120 VAC single phase fan motor which I expect runs on an ordinary 15A circuit.

My age and health are telling me its time to start cleaning out the shop and its simply excess to my needs.

So far, it looks like the Quincy 3.5 Hp 60 gallon may be the winner.

Quincy compressors are first class.
I have two of them.
One large, one small.

The dryer goes in the air line and needs to run even when the compressor is off. IIRC this one has a toggle switch to turn it on and off.

So on the output of the compressor tank and run when ever air is being used. Simpler plumbing. Still drain the tank and this dryer pulls the residual moisture out of the air leaving the tank. I rarely take air without the compressor running. So a relay box that when the compressor is running, runs the dryer at the same time.
Spoke to the wife about making the run. Two hours over, pick it up, do lunch someplace and two hours back. Might have a definite answer within the week.

FYI to reduce noise, staple carpet onto at least 3 of the 6 wall surfaces, best all six though.

Be careful to not insulate so perfectly for noise, that you don't restrict compressor airflow cooling.

I got the dryer from Dan. Great guy. Long trip. Fortunately, I had family at the half way point (horrifically dysfunctional people but entertaining).
Back in Richmond now with the dryer, still need to order the compressor. But there are 1,000,000 other things I need to do first, like move the 100 yards of dirt from the excavation, sift for rock and put it exactly where the wife wants it.
99.9% positive the 3.5hp Quincy is just the ticket, Motorman TP filter will be the shizzle.
I'll probably only run this once a month and there are a few jobs I do that will require it to run 5 hours continuous during the most humid of days. Do it once, do it right.
I just hope the dryer runs after decades of inactivity. Refrig compressors sometimes don't like inactivity.
