Looks like a white cloud between the trees. Local volleys with an active brush / trees fire.
Way to close for us. Wife and I are watching from the back window and deck . Years ago I would have been in the thick of it with an Indian pack, shovel and or broom. Now I just hope the locals get it under control. Good news is that the fields between me and the smoke are still either dirt or just starting to green.
I assume someone did not obey the burn ban.

I see you are in NY. Are fires normally an issue up your way?

Here in SW PA where I live I guess they might occur occasionally, but usually everything is either green or wet, so we never hear of them happening...in 40 years I am not sure I heard of a fire like that more than one time, if ever.

When I saw your post I thought you were out west in New Mexico or Arizona...

Hope it is put out soon and is no threat to you or your neighbors!

This area is a mix of heavy trees, family farms, and single family homes. A couple of grass fires a year is not uncommon. Today the high wind must have pushed a small fire into a larger fire. Nothing like fires out west.
We have lots of roads that act as fire breaks. I see some of the mutual aid trucks moving out so it must be under control.

Last fire we down this way was a hay field, guy was cutting with a really old Ford and a sickle bar. I assume stuff got caught up around the exhaust but that was 30 some years ago

What happened.
2 fires in same area. Home owner burning cardboard outside and it got away from him. Disposal of cardboard is free and we have a burn ban. I hope he is fined for being stupid. He did loose his garage.
Second was a logging company the threw a spark (?) .
About 17 acres burned. Close to 11 fire companies sent manpower.

Not to make light of the situation, as every unplanned fire is a serious issue.

Still, I can't help but think that those guys out West that deal with fires in excess of 10s of thousands of acres, might find our concern about a fire of less that 20 acres...a bit amusing...

Not amusing, but underwhelming.
But little fires can become big fires!
