Looking for a water pump for my L285 and the dealers want $360+ which is just plain ridiculous.

Any recommended/reliable places to get one of these after market water pumps?

Searched the forum and found little on the subject. Pretty sure mine is the original water pump so failure rate may be very low.

Hoping for some experienced Orange tractor owners to point me in the right direction.

You get what you pay for. If NIW chimes in, I'm sure he will tell you about his aftermarket water pump woes and what he had to do to fix it.

Me, I'd bite the bullet and get OEM because it will fit correctly and it's not a high failure part anyway. You'll only ever buy it one time.

I would look up Lance AKA 007kubotaguy here on OTT. Send him an email or private message.

I never dealt with him, but he's helped many here with older L-series parts.

I do understand that logic but that price is pretty ridiculous; so checking for options first.

Beware - I also thought $300+ for a real Kubota waterpump was pretty steep.

I ordered a 'middle of the line' aftermarket pump instead. (NOT made in China.... instead, made in India)

After bolting the new pump-housing to the front of the engine... IT WOULD NOT SPIN A FULL 360degrees by hand. The vanes on the pump were interfering with timing-gear-cover.

I ended up having to install/remove/grind/REPEAT using a dremel-tool to whittle the pump-vanes a little at a time until it would fit and spin.

Custom modifying the aftermarket pump added about 3 hours to the job. Other than that, the replacement pump has worked fine without leaking for 2 years.

If I were do do it again, I would GLADLY pay for the Kubota pump which would bolt right on and work out-of-the-box.

Yep I get that!! Kinda the reason for the question. FWIW my first thought was, it is a 45 year old tractor who's gonna make a water pump for it...
None of the pumps I have come across have any reviews, not to mention it seems there are not many here that have had to change a water pump (on a L285) so OEM may be the best (most expensive) choice.

I buy all of my new water pumps from All states ag parts. I have never had a problem with any of them. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input and after a few inquiries I went with Coleman Equipment. GREAT PRICE on the pump; easy transaction and FAST shipping; parts arrived three days after my order was placed.

Dry fit went perfect and need to get the fan belt situation figured out... YIKES!!!

So how “great” was the Coleman price? Was it an OEM pump or aftermarket.?

I replaced the water pump a few months ago on a Kubota D950 engine. I think it was about $60. Once you have the part number, easily found on the Messicks site just type it into Amazon and eBay for starters. I felt a little dirty afterwards but not for long. Good luck.

The Coleman Equipment price on their website is $191 so $170 cheaper than my local dealer.
Kinda stupid for them because I would support them (local dealer) if I could but that price is not even close. I got new top and bottom hoses as well as a new fan belt for $100 cheaper; even after paying $20 for shipping.
WIN WIN for me and Coleman, hard to support a local business who could order from Coleman and make a killin on resell...

OEM: the pump I took off had tapered (rounded) impeller blades the new one has square impeller blades. When dry fit it does turn freely in the engine block so no issues I can see just a different design. The pump I took off the main bearing was toast!!

FYI, The gasket is not included (additional $6)
There was no "permatex" material on the waterpump so thoughts on adding or using the OEM gasket as is?

Thanks for the reply.
As for the use of Permatex... I like using Permatex #2 on everyplace except where something different is specified (such as headgaskets).

I am pretty sure that you are correct.
I'm pretty sure Coleman only sells OEM parts, no aftermarket.
I will add a few pictures so you can see what I have both for install and removed. For all I know the pump removed is not OEM... I can say Coleman has a new customer as they were excellent in all regards.
THANKS GeoHorn for the assurance.

Here are the pictures from the water pump replacement I completed today. The top picturte is the old pump bottom is the new Coleman pump. They are 100% different impellers but both turn freely in the water pump housing so all good for now...
