2017 F-350 Super Duty 6.7L with 892,000 miles on the original engine and 922,832 miles overall. He also has a 2011 Super Duty with 725,000 miles on it.

I've been a Ford fan for decades ever since my brother gave me his Ford Fiesta when I first moved to the US. I've owned lots of Fords over the years, and when it comes to trucks I don't really look that closely at other brands. Fords have worked really well for me, particularly the Super Duty models having owned an '02 F-350 XLT 7.3L and the two I currently have which include an '02 F-250 Lariat 7.3L and a '24 F-450 Lariat 6.7L HO. I've owned three Rangers, an F-150, a Mustang SVT Cobra, SVT Contour, Thunderbird SC and an Explorer, but it's the Super Duty models that have impressed me the most and that continue to impress me.

This video popped up in my YouTube feed the other day and it was interesting for sure. Just goes to show that proper maintenance (in combination with how a truck is used) can make a difference despite all those that constantly put down newer diesel trucks.

Not related, but had to link this article.

I used to work with this person’s brother.

Well-documented, he ended up with 3.2 million miles on that Volvo.

My brush with Greatness and Notoriety….once removed…🥺

I wonder what "proper maintenance" he did. Also, I wonder if he's one of the 62 mph guys and where did he drive. If you haven't noticed it, there are a few out there that insist that they drive exactly 62 with the thought that they get much better MPG. I think that's fine except for when you are in a 80!

Wow, I wonder how much was spent on maintenance. My mechanic relative said to stay away from the Ford diesels, so I got a Duramax.

I’m a “Cummins” fan, but that is pretty impressive.

Yeah, there’s several Cummins equipped trucks in my area owned by delivery companies that have mileage in excess of 1M. One is owned by a local feed store and has racked up those miles transporting hay and pallets of feed.

Funny that you say that....

At 55 mph i get 16.5mpg
At 70 mph I get 14.3mpg
At 80 mph I get 13.3mpg

2021 Ford F350 SCLB 4x4, 7.3 Godzilla and 4.30 gears.

So ya I drive 55mph on back roads......

P.S. - Best tank was in Wyoming 17.3 mpg

The problem with advice from anyone about anything is that personal bias is almost always part of the equation. Mechanics are certainly guilty of this just as I am, and most are. Brand loyalty is a thing as we know, and it's often not based on actual data but on confirmation bias. When you want something to be true there's a tendency to dismiss anything that would indicate otherwise and only remember or mention the data that confirms the bias. This is human nature largely driven by ego, the desire for order in a chaotic and random world, and the illusion of control over many things that are beyond our control.

I personally like Ford Super Duty trucks which is based on my personal experience over the last 23 years of owning them. That said, reading about a Duramax that has lasted over a million miles doesn't make me wish I'd bought a Chevy or GMC or make me feel worse about the Fords that I own. All that matters to me is that I do everything reasonably possible to keep my trucks on the road and working well.

The 4.30 rear end is pretty darn awesome for towing but not so much for economy. I have the same rear end in my F-450.

The weekend before last I pulled a military truck on the gooseneck trailer with a combined weight of around 24,000 lb and it was the best towing experience I've ever had. The F-450 handled it with ease, even heading up some steep switchbacks and hills where I turned off cruise control because I felt the truck was pulling the load too fast for my comfort level. Yes, I could have reduced the speed via the button on the steering wheel, but in some situations I'd rather go old school and let my foot dictate what's going on.

The 6.7 or the 7.3 in your 450?

Nice Stewart and Stevenson
Yes it was. I sold it a couple of weeks ago to a young guy out in Hayden, ID. He asked me to deliver it to him (for a $500 fee) so I took it out there the weekend before last. I got about 420 miles out of 44 gallons of diesel on that trip i.e. 9.5 mpg which isn't bad pulling a 24,000 lb load out and a 7,000 lb load back. When I filled up it was $3.65/gallon so around $160 in fuel and about seven hours of my time.

^This!

Powerstroke - Cummins - Duramax....they are all good engines. But as with anything mechanical, there were years/models to stay away from because they were more prone to problems. I have two Cummins-powered trucks myself but I would not hesitate to own a Powerstroke. Know several people who own them and swear by them. Not too many Duramax trucks around here because GM abandoned rural Nevada years ago but from all I hear the engines are great - its the front ends that are problematic if the truck is used a lot off pavement.

If Ford offered all three as engine choices in the Super Duty trucks I'd have analysis paralysis. As you say, all good engines, but for me I like what the Powerstroke is wrapped in too.

My neighbor's Duramax developed a head gasket leak a few months ago. He ended up buying a 2018 Chevy/Duramax with the intention of fixing his older truck. He's not that happy with the newer truck which has DPF, EGR and DEF but not because of the engine. He's not a fan of the suspension but I noticed that the shocks are not factory.
