original owner. ~450 hours on the tractor. Use tiller, brush hog and flail mower. Went to go flail and heard a horrible knocking/ratcheting/gears skipping over themselves sound once I engaged the PTO. This is an HST model. It is definitely not the attachment as I’ve taken the flail off and engaged the PTO and I still get the same sound with the PTO turning only the spindle. Additionally, I’m noticing the cable that runs to the PTO engagement lever is fraying and I really need to lean forward on the handle to get the PTO to engage. In other words, just moving the PTO handle into the “on” position, does not engage the PTO any longer. Do I need to just figure out how to retighten that cable or is there something else going on internally that requires a shop mechanic?

First, replace the cable and properly adjust it!
If the noise is still there it will need the tractor split and replace the one way (engagement) clutch, as the two teeth have probably been rounded off.
