I want to switch my B2650 to Rotella T6. I currently run Rotella t4 15W40. When I switch over should I run the 5W40. Or still run the 15w40. Or does it matter. Thanks in advance

It depends on the temperature when you operate the tractor. If you are in VA and run it in the winter, I would go to 5W40.

+1 with @lynnmor

Been using T6 5w-40 for years. No block heater and use tractor for snowblower work.

5w makes for much easier cold starts.

Would it be ok to run that in the summer too? I mow about 3 acres in the summer time

Absolutely. Multi-vis motor oil…..5”w” is the cold weight/viscosity. 40 is the hot viscosity.

Been running 5W40 and sometimes 0W40 in Kubota B2620 since 2013 all year round.

Sometimes I want to scream!!!

5w, 10w, and 40 are not viscosities

They are viscosity grades which are defined by multiple different viscosity requirements.
  1. 5W is a cold weather grade. The viscosity must be no greater than 60,000 cP at -35C
  2. 15W is a cold weather grade. The vuscisity must be no greater than 60,000 cP at -25C.
  3. 40 is a operational temperature grade. The kinematic viscosity must be between 12.5 and 16.3 cSt at 100C and the high shear high temperaturec dynamic viscosity must be no less than 3.5 cP as measured in a rotary viscometer at 150C
Multigrade oils are oils that meet the requirenents of both a winter grade and an operational grade.

The difference between 5W40 and 15W40 is almost exclusively how well it flows at cold startup.

Better flowing engine oils are advantageous for the same reasons SUDT2 has a performace advantage over UDT and other conventional UTTO's

Its just that simple.

Dan - - appreciate correcting something I have done incorrectly.

Obviously a laymen's explanation; not a technically correct explanation.

Sorry for the mis-step.

Still work for me.

Put in vegetable oil and it's better than melted butter.

I have ran the gambit btwn the cheapest I could find, and even ran Slick 50 and Amsoil and Mobil 1 and Lucas, and, and... Not in my tractor but in my daily drivers.

I have gone back to what the manufacturer recommends.

Not once in my 63 years, did I ever hear a qualified mechanic, high end BMW tech, ( know a few), or a DIY shade tree mechanic guy say... "Oh, They used the wrong oil. That's why it failed"!

T6 5W-40 unless it never freezes where you live.

I wasn't trying to pick on you RCW. Its a pet peeve that just happened to land on you. Could have been any of 100s on here. Sorry.

I run full synthetic 5W-40 in both trucks, both tractors and the Kubota generator. Seems to work well for me and my equipment over the temperature range in which I live, which is typically -20F to 100F, but I've experienced more than a few days down in the -30F range. 100F is about as hot as it ever gets up here, and only for a few days. Typical highs in the summer are in the low 90s and there isn't much in the way of humidity up here in the summer i.e. 20% to 30% is normal.

Regardless of grade, don't stock up at bargain price then allow it to spoil by sitting on shelf too long,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so says latest trend.

Engine oil goes off?
If yes, how long can it be stored?
