Did you ever find out what was wrong? found this thread on a google search and got curios about what was wrong. Thanks!!

Looked and looked in the work shop manual, the lever is only a valve with a few opening, there is a screw on the end for checking pressure. I took that out and pressurized the hole to remove anything. Cleaned the metal suction filter, changed the fluid and the filter. Hosed down the lever area...

Started and driven a few feet trying to mow. No grinding sounds noticed. Fluid level OK.

I mowed the yard with no problems and parked the tractor. I came back a week later to mow and the PTO won't engage. Tried moving the PTO position selector from rear to mid to both with no change. Inspected the lever which seems harder to move than I remember. NOTHING!!! The mid and rear ptos...
