    Oil shelf life

I must admit I thought the steel cans were in use longer than that. I just tossed the last (I think) of the puncture type oil can spouts I had. Found it last month in a box of junk under the front porch we were renovating. The house was built new in 1991..... Dan

    Oil shelf life

I asked Google. According to the oil can collectors association: Composite / Cardboard Quarts: There are many names for the quarts that are constructed of a heavy cardboard with a metal top and bottom. Some collectors also refer to this type of can as simply a paper quart can. Composite quart...

    Oil shelf life

The notion that the "base oil" is millions of years old is equally silly. What does the word "synthetic" mean ? Even "conventional" base oil is a highly modified derivative of what came put of the ground. It has to be to have any value in an engine. REFINING "An industrial process where...

    GST transmission in L4740

A lot depends on price and what you expect to get out of it. How would you feel about a 2010 Toyota Camry with 100K on the clock? Parts and service on the Camry would be a lot less expensive and far easier to source.... Dan

    !5-40 Rotella oil

Don't mistake my comments for worry. I am not at all worried just pointing out the higher VI does not come without side effects as reflected in the viscosity standard. That's why 15W40 has been the industry standard for heay duty diesel engine use. That is changing as advances in petro-chemistry...

    !5-40 Rotella oil

The "concern" is minimum high temperature high shear (HTHS) viscosity requirement is lower for the 0W40, 5W40, and 10W40 grades - 3.5 vs 3.9 cP.. The reason I used quotes is its not much of a real concern. Based largely on advice here I went with the Rotella 5w40 on my 50 hr service.. I think...

    !5-40 Rotella oil

Cummins actually requires 5W40 in some of the newer engines. Use of 15W40 at reduced (<0C ??) temps has been shown to cause failure of the high tech valve.train. Now should I stir the pot by mentioning the one "concerning" performance difference in the two viscosity specifications. As the old...

    Replacing hydraulic pump hoses

In situations like thst a common approach is to tie/tape the new hose or wire to the old one and use the old one to snake the new one in. Doesn't work in all cases.... Dan

Bucket ED ……. My L724 loader on a L3240 HST has a bucket gone limp.

No. If they are hooked up right they shpuld work. Disconnect the hoses and observe the glow. It should tell you a lot. Dan

Bucket ED ……. My L724 loader on a L3240 HST has a bucket gone limp.

Yes. Take the two bucket hoses connected to the valve loose at the cylinder end and put them in a bucket. Start the tractor and check for flow when you operate thev loader valve. Dan

Bucket ED ……. My L724 loader on a L3240 HST has a bucket gone limp.

Your loader has a regenerstive spool on the bucket. It provides for fast dump. If you cross the bucket ports it will extend no matter which direction you move the lever. It will eventuslly reach end of stroke and be stuck there. Take the hoses loose and put them in a bucket. Start the tractor...

    LB 400

It just occurred to me you may think the tractor is an LB400. Thst is just the loader. What model tractor is it mounted on? Dan

    LB 400

You dont fill it. It runs off the tractor and uses the oil in the tractor sump. Dan

    L2550 GST full hydraulic issue

You need to verify there is oil delivery to the pump before you condemn it. Have you tried manually priming it? At the risk of beating a dead horse do your diagnostics at the pump. With what you have observed so far there could something wrong in the hydraulic block. Maybe the relief is blown...

    L2550 GST full hydraulic issue

That does not look good. You will get a much more reliable indication of what the pump is doing with the procedure I suggested. You can rev the engine hard and let it run for an extended period of time. What you are seeing may be just drain back. Dan

    BF500 loader

If you go that route make sure you verify all of the measurements. The cylinder I linked was chosen more or less at random. You need to determine retracted length, stroke, and pin hole sizes of the old cylinders then match that up. The lengths don't have to be an exact match - within an inch or...

    Oil shelf life

Interesting data. The one thing it demonstrates is that prior to the early to mid seventies when the science got better and API testing and licensing got more rigorous you had no real idea what was actually in the can. Blenders were all over the ballpark with additives snd claims. BTW i...
