My 1996 Kubota B20: tractor will not operate in 1st and 2nd gears only 3rd. HST issues? I hadn’t used the tractor for a few months, then today when I tried operating it, and after smoothly shifting to First, then starting to climb a hill, I quickly realized that I was in fact in 3rd even though my linkage read 1st. Anyone have any diagnosis help, thank you.

Your going to have to give more info than just will not operate.

Could be a clutch issue

ok. I shift into the positions for 1st and or 2nd, it it remains in third only. In other words no other gears work And obviously it lacks the power to climb.

Do you have the WSM?
Have you checked the linkage adjustments per the WSM?

I was wrong. It's not fixed. It's still in 3rd only.

So it still doesn’t shift into (low)1st or (Med.) 2nd gear, but only operates is (High) 3rd. I’ve started at the most basic level of diagnostics with changing the trans\hydrolic fluid and now examining the linkage. I’m wondering if you all could help me understand if the shift lever on my tractor is connected correctly. See images. I see a lever, lower than, shift lever, that has a slot in it and the lever itself is about 4 inch long, which is then attached to linkage below. I also see on the actual shifting lever that there appears to be a nub that could go into that slot. Perhaps it simply came out. Or the shifter lever somhow grabs it for shifting into one of the gears. When I shift the actual shifter the lower lever never moves and I can’t figure out what it could be used for otherwise. It remains pointing to the back of the tractor. Thanks for any and all eyes\advice on this!

I'll post the photos in the next post.

Here are 3 photos looking down at the shifter. The shifter has a metal pin protruding out 3/4 inch apron. Seen in 1st photo. The 3rd photo shows the lower shaft or shifter with a hole that looks like it would receive the pin from the upper shifter arm. Is this correct? If so how do you get them lined up as the lower arm won’t move.

Great! I think I was right, they do go together, now how to mate the two as the lower lever is stuck pointing to the rear instead of the front, Might anyone know how to move this lever to the forward position? It must be engaged by some gear that my brain can't figure. thank you!

I posted the wrong pic last time. I edited it.

It looks like your linkage in the third pic is flipped 180°.

It appears it should be pointing to the front.

It's very likely that since the linkage (YELLOW) is flipped over, and has moved the linkage (Green) aggressively, that it could have forced the fork (BLUE) out of it's shift collar.
DO not force yellow to flip over if it doesn't want to do it easily.
If it doesn't move easily take it apart and reassemble it properly.

As to why it did that, your guess would probably be as good as ours.

Thank you Folks, my issue is resolved. I think the previous owner must have taken the linkage apart for some reason and put it back facing the wrong direction. I reversed it and ALL is GOOD now! again thank you for your time and guidance.
