I did a simple little job with the L3010 today but I need to tell a story first. Out in the woods there is an old cellar hole on our place that dates back to the first homesteaders that came here soon after the town was incorporated in 1780. It doesn't look like much now. The the rock structure behind the birch tree was the base for the hearth and chimney in the center of the house.
There is also a rock lined well that is 18' deep and big enough in diameter for a bucket or a very skinny person.
In 2022 an elderly couple from the town's Historical Society became interested in it and they asked me if they could do some archaeological work there. I said sure. They used small hand tools and set up a fine screen to sift through the removed material. After a while they had pretty good pile of sifted soil under the screen.
Then Craig became ill and passed away so the work stopped. They were meticulous. Labeled exactly where they found what. They found lots of small things, like broken pottery, silverware, nails, maple syrup tap spigots, animal bones, small well rusted hand tools, etc. This is a very small sample but shows how they worked.
Anyway......, I had a sharp little hollow develop in our back lawn - like there was a log under and it rotted and collapsed. It was a pain to mow so I wanted to fill the depression. Trying to find a bucket of dirt that isn't half rock is hard to do here. Then I remembered the pile of sifted soil Craig and Donna left out in the woods a couple years ago.
